Dear Sir/Madam
I am currently leading a research project on the 'Economic, social and civic contributions of first & second generation humanitarian entrants'. This research is being undertaken by the University of Adelaide and is funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). The project seeks to understand the many valuable ways in which migrants from a refugee background – and their children - have contributed to Australia's social, economic and civic development over the past twenty years. This research will have important implications for Australia's refugee settlement policy.
As part of this research we are interviewing community leaders and representatives from different groups across the country.
I am writing to invite you to take part in an informal interview as part of this project. The interview will be about your own experiences as a humanitarian migrant, your work with your community as well as your views about the ways in which your community has contributed to Australia's economy and society. We would also be interested in learning your views about barriers which have prevented refugees and other humanitarian entrants from participating mainstream Australian society.
My research team will be in Sydney on the 30th and 31st March 2010. The interview would take approximately 30 - 40 minutes and can be held at a time and place which is convenient for you. We believe that your knowledge and experience would be invaluable to this project and your feedback would be important in providing DIAC with ideas about how to make refugee resettlement more effective.
We would not record the interview but if you agree we would like to use your name and that of your organisation in a list of key stakeholders that has contributed to this research. We will also be happy to share with you the key findings that have emerged from this research.
